Repetitive Injury and Ergonomics

    Repetitive Injury

Repetitive injury also know as repetitive strain, cumulative trauma and overuse. These soft tissue injuries (involving the tendons, ligaments and nerves of the upper extremity) comprise a majority of work, athletic and musician-related injuries. These injuries _link to "Carpal Tunnel/Repetitive Use Syndromes" page_ manifest themselves in many ways depending on the anatomic area and specific structures involved. The treatment of these troublesome conditions requires patience and a customized and multidisciplinary approach.

    Ergonomics

This discipline has developed in response to the recognition that positive impact can be made on many of the "repetitive injuries" seen in the workplace. It is further recognized to have a significant place in prevention and musculoskeletal health. The most common area that ergonomic advances have impacted daily work and recreational repetitve injury is as it relates to improvement of the computer workstation. Ergonomic insights and adjustments can be pivotal in preventing minor symptoms from progressing to a need for a surgical solution.
